Smile

3/7/20 Top Rocker at 613 Avenue Create!
3/16/20 Winner at A Bit More Time To Craft!

Hi everyone! Happy Sunday and March 1st! Wow, we are rockin’ and rollin’ right through the months, aren’t we?! The new March challenge is live over at Mix It Up Challenge Blog and I’m super stoked to share my DT inspiration project for MIUCB #35 – Anything Goes + Smooshing! I created a friendship card using the smooshing technique for my background, and what I call phantom die cutting, and I think it turned out pretty cool!

I grabbed the craft mat, Brushos, distress sprayer and a piece of cold press watercolor paper, and created my background. I started with yellow, then moved to orange, and then red, drying with my heat tool between smooshes. Using a fan brush, I splattered dark brown over the entire piece and when it was dry, trimmed it and matted it on dark brown cardstock. The great thing about watercolor backgrounds is there is no right or wrong, and every one you create looks different!

To create the raised inlaid die cut sentiment, I cut the ‘Smile’ sentiment into the background and into two scrap pieces of orange craft foam. I adhered the first foam die cut into the negative space, then adhered the second foam die cut on top of that one, and then adhered the background die cut on top of the foam. This is the second project I created using this technique and this time I used two foam die cuts instead of one, so it raised the sentiment up just a tad higher. I finished the front with English Mustard Crystal Drops.

I embellished the inside with leftover brown cardstock and a thin strip trimmed from the smooshed background, then I stamped a CAS-ual Fridays Stamp sentiment in brown ink.

Here’s one more look… totally happy with how this turned out! ;)

  1. Hi, Leslie! Great tutorial and juicy good-looking card! Do you prefer two foam layers on the word die now that you’ve done it? I want to try the foam instead of card stock but wondering if regular craft tacky glue will work? The layers look really nice, XXO

  2. Thank you, my friend! I think it would depend on how thick the foam is and the colors used as to whether one or two foam layers would look best. You definitely wouldn’t want to see ‘all foam’ if you know what I mean. Just experiment and see what looks good when you try it. You’ll fall in love – such a fun technique! ;)
